The Real Story Behind “Mission Raniganj”

Unveiling the Inspiring Story: "Mission Raniganj" - Akshay Kumar's Heroic Journey

Historical Roots of Raniganj Coalmine

The Raniganj Coalmine, discovered in 1774 by John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly of the East India Company, holds a significant place in India’s coal mining history. Located in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, the mine officially began coal extraction in 1820 under Alexander & Co., thanks to a mining license granted by Lord Warren Hastings. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Raniganj stood as a crucial coal producer in the country.

Challenges of Early Mining Practices

During a time of industrial backwardness and colonial rule, mining at Raniganj faced challenges. The absence of supporting pillars in mine structures and the exhaustive extraction of coal veins characterized this hazardous period. Miners constantly faced threats of cave-ins and collapses as they strived to maximize resource extraction.

The Tragic Events of November 13, 1989

On this unfortunate day, miners triggered blasts at Raniganj to break coal walls, resulting in a catastrophic chain of events. The structural shake caused water to flood an underground area, claiming six lives. A crack near the miners’ work site led to a collapse, trapping 65 miners. Rapidly rising water levels made traditional rescue efforts futile.

The Emergence of a Hero – Yashwant Singh Gill

Amidst despair, Yashwant Singh Gill, a daring mine engineer from IIT Dhanbad, emerged as the beacon of hope. Gill devised a six-foot-high iron capsule, 21 inches in diameter, and lowered it through a new borehole. Using a 12-tonne crane, he executed a meticulous operation, rescuing each of the 65 trapped miners one-by-one. The entire ordeal took Gill six hours, witnessed by a captivated audience of over 2,000 people.

Gill’s Triumph and Recognition

Gill’s indomitable spirit and ingenuity prevailed, saving each trapped miner. The rescue operation, completed on November 16, is commemorated annually by Coal India as Rescue Day. For his heroic feat, President Ramaswamy Venkataraman conferred upon Gill the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak.
